DESCRIPTION:Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Day\, in the United States\, holiday (third Monday in January) honouring the achievements of Martin Luther King\, Jr. A Baptist minister who advocated the use of nonviolent means to end racial segregation\, he first came to national prominence during a bus boycott by African Americans in Montgomery\, Alabama\, in 1955. He founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957 and led the 1963 March on Washington. The most influential of African American civil rights leaders during the 1960s\, he was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964\, which outlawed discrimination in public accommodations\, facilities\, and employment\, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964. He was assassinated on April 4\, 1968.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMartin Luther King\, Jr.\, Day: parade\n\n\n  \nAlmost immediately after King’s death\, there were calls for a national holiday in his honour. Beginning in 1970\, a number of states and cities made his birthday\, January 15\, a holiday. Although legislation for a federal holiday was introduced in Congress as early as 1968\, there was sufficient opposition\, on racial and political grounds\, to block its passage. In 1983 legislation making the third Monday in January a federal holiday finally was passed\, and the first observance nationwide was in 1986. Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are secondary living units on a property in California that provide independent living for one or more people. ADUs can be attached to the main residence or detached\, and can be built in existing space like a garage or master bedroom.  \n\nBenefits of ADUs  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAffordable housing: ADUs can be more affordable to build than other housing options\nRental income: ADUs can provide a source of rental income\nFamily housing: ADUs can provide housing for extended family members\n\n\n\n\n\nAging in place: ADUs can allow seniors to age in place while maintaining privacy\n\n\n\n\n\nTypes of ADUs  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetached: ADUs that are separated from the main residence\n\n\n\n\nAttached: ADUs that are attached to the main residence\n\n\n\n\nRepurposed space: ADUs built in existing space\, such as a garage or master bedroom\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecent ADU laws\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAB 976: Permanently allows owners to build rental ADUs on their properties \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAB 2533 and SB 1211: New requirements that apply to all local ADU ordinances \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSB 1077: Requires the California Coastal Commission and Department of Housing and Community Development to develop guidance for ADUs in coastal areas \n\n\n\n\nThe Delta AOR team will meet in the parking lot of City Hall located at 150 City Park Way off Oak Street at 6:30 pm to review talking points and procedures. The change was designed to schedule certain holidays so that workers had a number of long weekends throughout the year\, but it has been opposed by those who believe that those holidays should be celebrated on the dates they actually commemorate. During debate on the bill\, it was proposed that Washington’s Birthday be renamed Presidents’ Day to honour the birthdays of both Washington (February 22) and Lincoln (February 12); although Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated in many states\, it was never an official federal holiday.
