Mandatory Code of Ethics Training
Biennial Code of Ethics Training
In an ongoing effort to raise the level of professionalism and ethics in the real estate industry the National Association of REALTORS® has instituted a mandatory "Code of Ethics Biennial Training Cycle".
Starting this year, every REALTOR® member of every Association in the United States is required to complete ethics training of not less than 2.5 hours every two years - thus the name "biennial" training.
The deadline for this cycle is December 31, 2018. The "NAR Code of Ethics" includes a final exam to test your comprehension of the material and a downloadable certificate for your office.
If this course is taken as a sanction for an ethics violation, the certification can be submitted as proof of completion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to?
If your license expires in 2019 or 2020 you will need to complete a course on the Code of Ethics before the end of 2018.
If your license expires in 2017 or 2018 the BRE Continuing Education required Ethics to renew your license fulfills the requirement for the first NAR Code of Ethics biennial cycle.
I have been licensed for over 50 years and exempt from continuing education requirements, does this still apply to me?
This requirement has nothing to do with BRE licensing, it is a NAR mandate that all REALTORS® must complete a course
in the Code of Ethics every 2-year cycle. First cycle 2017/2018, second2019/2020 and so on.
What if I don't do it?
The Association is required by NAR to report completed classes and must suspend a member if the required class is not completed by the end of each two-year cycle. Suspension of membership will remain in force until the member completes the required course.
Is there a cost for taking the class? NO
Can I take this class online? Yes, C.A.R. and NAR offer no cost online Code of Ethics class. Visit Realtor.org. Put your curser over the Education Tab and click on the Code of Ethics Training. Then Take the FREE Course for Existing Members.
